Lighthouse Point Park, Florida

Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, we have had the chance to explore a tiny bit of Florida.

I have to say that this state has surprised me with its landscape. Florida is famous for its white-sand beaches, as well as the fact that it lacks hills and mountains (unless sand dunes count), but as much as it misses those, it makes up in lush greenery no matter where you find yourself.

While in the area, we decided to visit Lighthouse Point Park, located near Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, and I have to admit that I did not expect what we found there.

I thought we were going to find endless beach and not much else, but I was wrong. I was taken aback by the wilderness surrounding the area - “saw palmetto” covering the white sands as far as the eye can see, mixed with grown palm trees and other bushes, forming a wildly green background on the otherwise white sand of the beach. Among this abundant green stands tall the red-colored lighthouse. I found the view quite stunning.

We first walked towards the beach and then got on the fishing jetty to make our way to the break wall. On our way there we saw dolphins swimming by the shore, seemingly racing with the surfers. We stopped for a few minutes to watch them playing with the waves.

While it was sunny when we got to the park, by the time we reached the end of the fishing jetty, cold air, stormy clouds, and high winds took over - I was sure it was going to rain so we decided to head back. However, once we reached the parking area, the sun came out and we continued our stroll on the boardwalk this time. It got a bit warmer but the wind was just as relentless, as you might tell from the photos.

Word is that this landscape houses plenty of creatures. Sadly, the only wildlife we saw while walking [on the boardwalk] through the unspoiled area was a hurried turtle that quickly hid in between the greenery (yes, some of them move relatively quick). We kept watching for other creatures but saw none other.

The boardwalk has picnic areas, and some are equipped with outdoor grills; has the wind been less crazy, we might have stopped at one of them and enjoyed the sound of the crashing waves on the nearby beach. But with the wind and thick clouds covering the sky on and off, we decided to leave.

I can’t begin to tell you what the wind has done to my hair that day - brushing it while dry was an impossible task… so… maybe don’t wear it on your shoulders if you go there… 😉

Note: there is a $10 charge per vehicle to enter the park. Nearby free parking outside the park is not available.
