What to wear in the South
I typically would never recommend or advise anyone to visit the South in the summer. Unless you have a very high tolerance for heat, the humidity and high temperatures here will make for a miserable experience. Not to mention that the sun seriously feels so much hotter, and it burns your skin in a matter of minutes, if not wearing a good SPF (50+). Though if you live in the South, or have to visit for a particular reason, you don’t have many options other than putting up with the heat.
I have heard people say that it never gets over 100F here, which, technically, is true, but it doesn’t make it any less hot. Last summer was our first one here in Florida, and temperatures were frequently over 90F. Though, with the humidity and heat, the real-feel temperatures were well over 100F day after day.
So, really, how does one survive summers down here? It depends…
Note: Both caftan dresses I’m wearing are old from H&M; espadrilles are linked below.
My style is undeniably feminine, and dresses are my go-to for pretty much everything, so that’s how I survive the heat, and the reason why I always recommend them before anything else. I do, however, understand that not everyone is into them, and dresses aren’t always practical.
I’ve seen people wear all sorts of things here, though the most surprising has been seeing women wearing athleisure, typically, leggings in the summer days. I, for one, can not understand that simply because I cannot imagine wearing anything skin-tight - the humidity makes everything stick and I just hate that. The same goes with jeans in the summer, or pants, for that matter.
Apart from those, I see most people just wear shorts, either with tees (like this or this, or this set - as do I typically with skirts), or some other tops.
More than what one wears, the fabric it’s made of is the most important. I usually reach for natural materials like linen and cotton, because they are breathable, though I don’t always steer clear of man-made ones, especially if the dresses I wear in those fabrics are lined. For maximum comfort, I reach for dresses that touch the body as little as possible or opt for a looser fit. And when dresses aren’t practical, I choose jumpsuits.
As far as shoes, I wear mostly fabric espadrilles (I shared more here) or flats; I typically don’t like sandals or slides that are mostly open, and sneakers just make me too hot.
If you plan to live in the South or visit here during the late spring and summer seasons, these are the styles I recommend - I hope you like them.
What do you typically wear in the summer?
Until next time.

Em
