How to create a peaceful and relaxing home
For many of us, our homes are cherished spaces where we decompress, recharge, and get ready to take on the world. So it’s no wonder that it’s important for them to be peaceful and relaxing environments. Here are a few tips on how to make that happen (you can find a few more tips in this post):
Start with decluttering
A cluttered home can lead to stress and anxiety, and frankly, it’s plain unsightly. Clear out unnecessary items and furniture, and organize your space. Use decorative trays and baskets to accomplish that. Donate or sell anything you no longer need. If you have items that you don’t necessarily love but are reluctant to part ways with for whatever reason, try to store them out of sight; surround yourself only with the things you love.
Add area rugs
While wood or wood-like flooring is sexy, bare or wall-to-wall carpeted floors just aren’t. Add area rugs strategically throughout the room to create separation and add interest, as well as coziness.
look for comfortable furniture
Look for furniture that is both comfortable and functional (for example, pieces that come with [hidden] storage options). Also, choose pieces that you enjoy sitting on, lounging on or simply looking at.
Add calming colors
Choose colors that calm you and that you enjoy looking at, especially in the bedroom, the place where maximum relaxation is expected. Lighter blues or greens (such as sage), or grays are great options for walls and/or decor elements.
Create a cozy atmosphere
Add soft blankets, fluffy pillows, and warm lighting to your space. This can help create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Bring nature indoors
I’ve said it before — plants and flowers make a difference in any interior. They can help purify the air and create a calming atmosphere. For plants, choose the ones that are easy to care for and add a touch of green to your space — dracaena species are perfect for this. Consider this one and this one.
Incorporate natural materials
Natural materials, such as wood, ceramic, wicker, and rattan can help create a calming and relaxing atmosphere (no wonder so many vacation places feature them). Consider adding some wooden furniture and wicker accents to your home. You can also incorporate natural materials into your decor, such as using a jute rug or adding woven baskets, as well as other natural elements. I like to incorporate shells and corals (as shown in the photo above) that we collected ourselves during relaxing times at the beach — seeing them always brings me joy and reminds me of those times.
Incorporate aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a great way to create a relaxing atmosphere and promote well-being. Scents like lavender, sage, and eucalyptus (my favorite), are perfect for helping promote relaxation and reduce stress. You can also use a pillow spray to aid with better sleep.
Play soothing music:
Soft, calming music can help you relax and unwind. Create a playlist of relaxing music to listen to while you’re at home. Youtube has a ton of options and so does Spotify, to name a few.
