The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane review
I’m sure you have heard about retinol by now, as this ingredient has taken the world of beauty by storm lately; it seems that every beauty company is incorporating retinol in one way or another.
Retinol is a form of Vitamin A, and in skincare, it is used as an effective way to fight the aging of the skin and the things that come with it (fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, etc.). While it sounds ideal, retinol is a product that can be irritating to the skin and can cause redness and peeling, especially in more sensitive areas like around the eyes. For this reason, it is not recommended to be used every day but, at most, 2-3 times a week.
In researching affordable retinol products that are effective, I’ve come across The Ordinary (check my previous experience with the brand here), and decided to try the Retinol 0.5% in Squalane. Here are the things you need to know about this product.
Description
This retinol is of moderate strength and can be highly irritating. The brand describes it as “This water-free solution contains 0.5% pure Retinol, an ingredient that can reduce the appearances of fine lines, of photodamage and of general skin aging”.
safety & PATCH TEST
First and foremost, retinol is NOT ADVISED to be used while pregnant or breastfeeding. This product should be used at night only as it can cause sensitivity to sun exposure, hence possibly causing sunburns. You should wear sunscreen after using it.
Especially if your skin is sensitive, perform a patch test prior to use to avoid skin reactions. It is not recommended to use on compromised, peeling, or broken skin! Note that if you are experiencing an excessive feeling of burning, redness, irritation, and itchiness, the product is too strong for you and you shouldn’t use it.
Consistency
This comes in the form of oil (squalane), of a yellow color (the color of retinol). I have not experienced staining, though I avoid touching anything other than my face during application.
STORING
It is advised to refrigerate this product after opening.
Applying it
Because it’s retinol, I use this exclusively at night, a few times a week, or, based on my skin needs/feel. I apply 2-3 drops on my palm and gently massage in an upward movement on clean and dry skin.
The result
I noticed improvements in my skin soon after using it. I especially prioritize it when I experience breakouts of any kind, as it helps heal them quicker. Even with little use, there is also an improvement in my fine lines. I have not experienced purging, irritation, dryness, or peeling after using this product, which is a big plus for me, and I believe that to be because of the squalane. Squalane provides moisture and elasticity, and it is safe and beneficial for all skin types, including oily and acne-prone ones.
Bottom line
My only negative with this product is the oil form. I’d much more prefer it to come in a cream version because oils just don’t absorb into my skin, and that makes it unpleasant for me. BUT, this doesn’t make this product a bad one by any means - the price and its effectiveness are the things that make it a keeper, and if you are looking for retinol to add to your skincare routine, try this one, especially if you like to use face oils.
Have you tried this product before?
Until next time.

Em
