Life lately: Florida summers and [post] pandemic feelings
Outfit details in this post.
In my mind, summer begins June 1st. This day marks the beginning of hurricane season in Florida, which brings the humidity and extreme heat that will stay with us at least until October. If I’m being honest, this is the time when we begin to hunker down inside, away from the insane sun and heat (seriously, the sun is so much hotter down here!).
After learning last year, when we experienced our first summer in Florida, what they are about, I can fully say that summer’s not my favorite season here, that’s for sure. I actually dread it! Not because of the hurricanes, but because of the cruel sun and humidity.
The past few months, when the weather was absolutely gorgeous, we were busy with deadlines and had other things going on, which prevented us from taking full advantage of the unusually beautiful weather we’ve had. And now summer’s upon us.
While everyone is getting excited about the summer, I’m experiencing the opposite. And as we’re now fully vaccinated, and a lot of people seem to be going back to a somewhat normal life, I’m craving socializing. The problem? We still don’t know people here.
Because of the pandemic and the lack of restrictions in Florida (you never know what people are really doing, and our health is and has been our priority), we’ve kept to ourselves this past year, occasionally meeting with the only people we know and are familiar with - our former landlords (we stayed in a vacation rental prior to officially moving to Florida).
Apart from having long chats with a few neighbors whenever we run into each other, we haven’t formed any other actual friendships in this state, and well, it’s starting to feel a little lonely around here.
Had there been other times, we probably would have queued some travel, but we want to wait a little longer and see what happens before we do that; like I said, our health is our priority.
While we try to figure out this new life, as well as our new state (it all still feels very new), we’re entertaining ourselves the best way we can these days: going for walks whenever possible (and observing everything), cooking up a storm, reading, tending to my houseplants, and keeping up with the TV shows we’re watching (The Blacklist (God, it’s soo good!), Younger, Nancy Drew, as well as the latest ones we’ve started to watch - Cruel Summer and The Morning Show). We don’t have Netflix and don’t plan on getting it as we only watch these shows strictly during dinner and while doing dishes, and I feel like having Netflix would be too distracting; we watch all these shows (except the Blacklist) via Hulu or Apple TV that come free with our phone plan (I believe the Apple TV offer is now expired).
Are we the only ones who are still taking it easy with this pandemic?
Fun fact: this location was closed today due to a black bear sighting.
Until next time.
