New Year, not the same me...

People don’t change overnight. The fact that a new year has come does not mean that a new you or a new life opens up. No, everything will be the same unless you do something about it.
The reality is that the majority of us begin a new year with high hopes, resolutions, goals and the list goes on. I was doing that too. And I was a part of the 80% of the people who dropped them, if not in the first month of the year, then somewhere along. And even if I was sticking with some of my personal goals and succeeding at them, my reality was mostly the same: same “luxury” apartment, in which we were freezing in the winter and dying of heat in the summer, still surrounded by the rudest and most inconsiderate neighbors that were also apartment management staff; the same job I hated that took so much of me physically and emotionally; with the same coworkers whose goals were to go through another year in their jobs, doing as little work as possible, while hating on those who were doing more; still counting the minutes till 5pm and as soon as it struck, running out the door with everyone else trying to get ahead of the traffic Mondays through Fridays; still doing a little dance for the upcoming weekend on Friday evening; still overtaken by misery on Sundays when we were about to get on the hamster wheel again.
It was my reality and it is the reality of many people in the “Corporate World”. Yes, I know not all companies are like that; for me, it makes no difference.
It was over a year ago when we took a good look at our lives and understood that it was not what we wanted. So we “did a 180”, left our jobs and our comfort zone in order to find our purpose and what truly makes us happy. It’s been an interesting journey so far, insightful, and fulfilling at that.
Yes, we left our comfortable and always-on-time paychecks, but gosh, the freedom is exhilarating. Being able to explore our creativity and expand our limits has been more rewarding than those benefits for which I had to sacrifice what I truly wanted and believed in.
I’m sharing this because, as we are at the beginning of a new year, you might also want to make a change towards something more meaningful and fulfilling. If you find yourself in these lines I wrote above, take inventory of your life and see how you can achieve that, surprise yourself!
If you already are doing something meaningful, even if for yourself only, and are feeling fulfilled, you are truly blessed, remember that.
Happy New Year friends! To a new, happier, and more fulfilling beginning!
xoxo,
Em
