Fall style: the sweater edit

True story… Many years ago, I used to knit and crochet. I loved doing it, especially in the winter when it was too cold to go outside…

I made scarves for anyone in my family who wanted one (or not), wool socks, and slippers. I was so good at it that I could do it with my eyes closed.

I even knitted a beret for myself — really! It was of light pink mohair with a black horizontal stripe, too big, and I had to resize it.

Oh, and I also knit myself a sweater.

I remember that sweater perfectly — it was marigold yellow in a peacock’s tail knitting pattern, with plum cuffs and neckline knitted in a rib pattern. I won’t lie that making it took months of hard work — leave it to me to make things complicated by choosing that pattern… I was proud of it, though I ended up undoing that sweater as I grew out of it, and used the yarn for something else. I honestly don’t remember what.

Anyway, that’s the story of one beautiful sweater I made from scratch and undid not that long after… I do know that that was the first and last time I knitted a sweater — it was too much work!

As far as my knitting, I tried keeping up with it, but as we moved to warmer weather and time was less and less, I didn’t find the need for it.

While you can make your own sweaters, it would be much easier and quicker, if you just bought one, haha. Especially as it looks like sweater weather will finally make its debut in the South this weekend. And I tell ya — the excitement is palpable!

Why yes, after months and months of temperatures that felt like well over 100ºF, we’ll finally be getting some comfortable weather (I hope!). And we might actually need sweaters!

I love sweaters almost as much as I love dresses, though, in all honesty, I’d prefer not having to wear them [the sweaters]. Can I just have a comfy 78ºF year-round, please? PLEASE?!

Back to sweaters…

To get out of the basic [and sometimes boring] look when it comes to them, go for textures and eye-catching knit patterns like this sweater, this cable-knit, and why not, something really eye-catching like this foil sweater, or metallic finish.

Or, of course, you can keep it simple and go with the classics. Oh, and remember that striped sweaters (almost identical to this one) are always a classic.

Speaking of stripes, I bought this style a while ago, and I might actually get to wear it this season. Though mine is ivory with beige stripes rather than beige with ivory stripes — either way, it’s a cutie!
