What to wear in spring

It’s that time of the year when the desire for change comes in strong. Like clockwork, I’m itching for a haircut, but also something fresh, something new. Luckily, I’m not alone.

What to wear in spring is a question that comes up around this time, so I thought of putting together a list. Obviously, as Florida basically skips spring and goes to summer, I wear dresses almost 100% of the time. However, while living in California or a four-season climate, the items below were what I had in rotation this season.

SO, WHAT TO WEAR IN SPRING?

Dresses

Warm weather comes with an increased interest in dresses. If you ever wondered what to wear in spring, dresses would be the default answer (though there’s more to it).

Denim dresses are great transitional pieces while the temperatures are up and down — this casual maxi denim dress is another great option.

Obviously, I adore a good shirt dress and always have one more to add to my wishlist. These come in a myriad of styles from relaxed/oversized, to maxi, and midi, of course. They’re perfect to “throw on” when you need to run out the door.

Linen dresses are another great option for spring, as well as summer. This knee-length linen dress has pockets, it’s versatile, and I think it would look amazing with a denim jacket. The same style comes in a longer version, if you prefer it.

By the way, in case you’re looking for a wedding guest dress, this one would be great. This mini dress is also adorable, and so is this one (plus, it has pockets).

Layers

Always have layers handy during the changing seasons (spring and fall) for those swings in temperature.

A lady jacket (it also comes in black) is truly a classic piece that will outlast trends. The beauty of it is that it goes with everything, and you can “play around” by going for a contrasting style or keeping it as straightforward as it gets, aka all neutral to skip the does this match game.

A knit jacket is another classic and elegant piece that you’ll get a lot of wear out of, and the upside is that they also come in a lot of colors.

Cardigans are a must-have in my book, and I always have one on hand. This open cardigan is beautiful, a lightweight cardigan is perfect for spring and summer’s cool evenings.

Obviously, a blazer is another timeless piece that can elevate an outfit, and it’s perfect for any season. Or, you can always go for a more casual version — the sweater blazer.

Lastly, if you live in a four-season climate, a trench coat is a must-have. I prefer a longer version to ensure it goes with dresses, but you can always go with the classic knee-length trench, or with one that falls somewhere in between.

Button-downs

Whether it’s a classic cotton shirt or a linen blend shirt, long sleeve or short sleeve, with feminine details, or a relaxed fit, a button down (or button up) is an indispensable piece in any spring wardrobe (well year-round). It’s the fail-safe addition to an outfit — just pair it with jeans, trousers, or other bottoms (shorts, skirts) for an effortless and chic look. Make it your outfit formula for days when you’re in a rush, or don’t want to be bothered, but still look put-together.

Jeans

Forever a staple, no matter the season.

I have to admit that I haven’t purchased jeans in years, and have barely worn any, but I do like these white jeans, these straight jeans, or these crop jeans.

Trousers

A staple, sure, but just give jeans a break and embrace trousers. Pleated trousers are classics that go with a variety of tops for effortless outfits. Obviously, a straight pant looks chic with anything.

Wide-leg trousers are great for spring and summer if you don’t want to wear a dress but still be comfortable when it’s warm. Linen trousers are perfect for spring (and summer), whether they lean towards casual, elegant, or somewhere in between.

Skirts

I love a full, flowy skirt, but I’m also one to recognize the beauty and elegance of a straight(ish)-style skirt — it visually makes you look taller, and slender if that’s something you’re looking for.

Skirt styles have evolved greatly over the years, offering something for everyone. From pleated to utility, to must-have slip skirts, your spring style will surely benefit from one. Also, midi and long denim skirts have made a comeback and I have to admit that I like the trend, even if they may not necessarily fit my style.

Wear skirts with sweaters, button-downs, T-shirts, — basically any tops. I would, however, advise against pairing a fuller skirt with a boxy top to avoid looking frumpy. Wear an oversized top with a straight skirt, and a fitted top with a skirt that has some volume to it (though the fitted top and skirt aren’t mutually exclusive by any means).

Ballet flats, loafers, etc.

When one thinks of spring shoes, ballet flats come to mind first.

These woven flats were made to be worn in spring (and summer); these cap-toe slingbacks are a must-have, as well as these cap-toe ballet flats, and obviously these blue tweed as well as these cream tweed flats.
