My outfit: dress, jacket and shoes are old. Bag is available here; sunglasses here.

It does not feel like jacket season is upon us — not in Florida, but I’m sure it’s creeping up everywhere else.

Even so, I like to have a few styles on hand to make sure they compliment my outfits, whether I’m wearing a dress, jeans (once the weather cools), or some other outfit.

Luckily, retailers are not disappointing us as there are myriad styles and even colors out there. Although I generally like to keep my outerwear on the neutral side to ensure it’s as versatile as it can be. To sum it up, I like my outerwear in navy, creams, beige, black, and even red. Grey is a good option as well.

As I don’t like to mix prints, I avoid them in these items, though I will admit prints can add interest to an otherwise neutral outfit or a sweater dress, for example.

A new trend in outerwear has emerged in recent years — cropped styles. I personally love them, however, cropped jackets are best (and most comfortably) worn with dresses, high-waisted skirts, and pants. As an example, I think this particular double-breasted cropped jacket will look stunning with a denim skirt like this one and this one, structured pants, or high-waisted pants. Another way to elevate this jacket is to wear it with a sweater dress in cooler weather, or a ribbed dress.

Tweed jackets are classics that have come back in full force in recent years, and I am a fan. A simple cut makes a tweed jacket the perfect piece for any outfit and occasion, and one with jewel buttons is the perfect accompaniment for an evening dress.

If you’re willing to splurge, this herringbone tweed jacket is stunning and also comes in a beautiful navy color — definitely classic pieces you’ll wear for years to come.

If you’re looking for a longer jacket, this one with a belt and pockets is structured and gorgeous! This tweed pocket jacket is another great option.

Of course, we cannot forget about the quintessential trench coat, the piece that is as classic as it gets. I personally think that a longer style like this timeless trench coat or this double-breasted one looks more chic, however, a shorter version works just as well.
