Fall style guide for the South

Fall style guide for the South | Blooming Magnolias Blog | Fashion, fall style, fall outfit, fall look. fall style guide. what to wear in the South during fall

My outfit is old.

I’d like to think that fall is making its way to the South, even though the current temperatures aren’t quite suggesting that. Yes, it’s still hot and humid, but soon enough, we’ll get the break we’ve been asking for. And possibly more as the temperatures dip well below what we’re used to — it happens every year like clockwork. So now would be the time to get ready, as in, get your fall wardrobe ready.

As seasons start to blend in, dressing becomes a guessing game. So I thought of sharing a list of items every woman should have in her closet to solve that problem, effortlessly.

Let’s dive in!

style staples every woman should have for her fall wardrobe

A water-resistant trench coat. Let’s begin with the obvious since a trench coat is a staple for [real] fall, even in the South. This double-breasted trench coat is another great option (it looks so good!).

A denim jacket. I somehow can’t “weave” one into my style, though I will be the first to admit they can elevate an outfit effortlessly and can look really chic.

A good pair of denim. Clearly, there’s nothing that beats them. The issue is that I’m completely out of touch when it comes to denim as I wear them so very rarely. I do prefer a darker wash, and I know that no matter what and who is saying it, I am not going back to skinny or low-rise jeans. For an idea, I somewhat like these, these, and these.

A cardigan for more casual outfits. I personally love a long cardigan — it looks cozy and chic, however, a shorter cardigan can be just as comfortable. And, of course, you can never go wrong with the classic cardigan to throw over your shoulders whenever it gets chilly.

A dressier cardigan to wear in the office or even a restaurant. This one is another choice. To stand out, try a cape jacket when out and about — it works well when worn over a dress or with pants and denim.

A lady jacket or tweed jacket for more formal looks. You can never go wrong with this item as it remains a style staple.

A sweater dress. We know it can still get pretty cold in the South, so I fully recommend having a sweater dress on hand during the cooler seasons for effortless dressing, be it for work or errands. Even a short-sleeved sweater dress can be easily elevated with a blazer to wear to work on days when you’re running late or don’t know what to wear. Add tights when temperatures drop.

A scarf. Silk or cashmere, I highly recommend adding a scarf to your wardrobe (well, more in various colors is better). It can easily transform an outfit and add warmth (yes, even silk scarves though not as much as a pashmina) when needed.

A pair of booties and/or boots. For Florida specifically, I am adding this reluctantly, as boots and booties are a rare need, though I see people wearing them either way. However, I recognize that it can get quite cold starting just north of Central Florida and above, so boots and booties it is. I’ve shared them before, but I really love these booties, and these — they’re so chic.

For knee-high boots, these will serve you for years, as will any of these (code SF-EM-15 will save you 15%). These and these are other options.
