Your summer style simplified
Yes, it’s unbearably hot, but it doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice looks and style.
As someone who likes to look put together at all times, I have my “formulas” that help me with just that. The secret is, of course, to not overcomplicate things and focus on the things I like, rather than trends and influences. And yes, I like dresses and I will always choose to wear one before anything else. But this post is not just about dresses, but rather, about ways to elevate your look while staying somewhat comfortable during those sweltering summer days.
Here are some ideas:
Airy dresses
I am still fully onboard with wearing dresses in the summer. It’s the easiest and fastest way to get dressed, and look put-together. An added bonus is that I feel the most comfortable wearing one.
I prefer midi and maxi dresses and choose fabrics like cotton and linen/linen blends to maximize comfort. I fully avoid jersey fabrics — I don’t like the look of them, and again, find them uncomfortable in the summer.
When I say airy dresses, here are a few examples I have in mind:
This 100% linen dress is made for hot summer days and has pockets!
This poplin dress is chic and will instantly make you look put together!
This fit-and-flare dress is both playful and dressy!
This linen-blend shirt dress is perfect for every day and so is this drapey linen-blend dress (plus, it has pockets).
This embroidered mini-dress is perfect for going out. It also comes as a top and it’s equally adorable.
P.S. If you want more colorful styles, or have a wedding to attend, check out these dresses!
Avoid T-shirts and opt for shirts instead
I would suggest avoiding wearing T-shirts in the summer, with the exception of a white tee here and there.
I find T-shirts uncomfortable because they are less breathable and stick to the skin — a no-no for me! And even though the linen T-shirts may be more comfortable, I don’t quite like the look of them.
I opt instead for a crisp cotton or linen-blend shirt. They’re much dressier and breathable — a pair of shorts will look instantly more elevated when worn with a shirt.
Elevate your shorts
Yes, I’m not someone who wears shorts — I have big bones so certain things just don’t look good on me. Instead of making myself feel uncomfortable about it, I stick to what works. However, if you’re someone who loves to wear shorts, by all means, keep wearing them — there are too many cute styles not to.
And sure, denim shorts are quintessential, but for summer, opt for breathable linen, linen-blend, and cotton. Add some texture and wear them with a sweater tank for a dressy-casual flair.
Skorts are also great options and I love how these look.
Give skirts a try
If wearing a dress is a little too simple for you, go for a skirt and a nice top instead. This look remains one of my favorites so far, and I can “play” with its “elements” in any way I want.
I can wear this skirt in countless ways and occasions because of its style and fabric, and that’s just the beauty of it!
A slip skirt can be a lifesaver for any season, and it’s a chic piece to have. The same goes for pleated skirts.
Cute shoes
I don’t know about you, but I like my outfit better when I’m wearing cute (and comfortable) shoes. I refuse to get on the Birkenstock trend and opt for more elegant styles.
I’ve worn these slingback sandals a lot since I got them; I love them because they go with everything and are really cute! But my favorite and most treasured shoes remain my Sarah Flint Natalie slingbacks (on sale through 07/07; you can always use code SF-EM-15 for 15% off). They’re beautiful, comfortable, and go with everything.
If you have the budget, I recommend looking there — for every style you need, you’ll find it. And you can always count on quality and comfort being at the forefront of the brand.
Don’t skip the accessories
Summer dressing is about having fun and accessories play a big role. Try a pair of oversized earrings. Add texture with a rattan, raffia, or woven bag. Add a fun belt if the outfit calls for it, a necklace (looks just like a pearl one I have and adore), or a bracelet or two. The point with accessories is to have fun while also completing your look!
