What I've been reading lately
I’ve said many times before that whenever I feel overwhelmed by world events, and need an escape, I turn to books. Needless to say that I’ve been reading a lot this past year and a half, and my reading has only intensified recently with the discovery of two [free] apps, that allow me to read books [for free].
I’ve been drawn lately to [mostly] mindless, easy reads - books that are not realistic (most are fiction), but make you feel good while reading them. Here’s what I’ve been diving into, in case you’re looking for fun reads, as well:
A cozy read, the book eases into the story of our main character’s life falling apart because of a silly “no-holding back” email intended for her friend, that gets sent to her entire contact list instead. As she works to put her life back together, some things just fall into place, while others, not so much as she realizes that she’s falling for the person who sent that email, or so she thought. Things are complicated (of course!), but as with any other good book, it all works out, especially as she has a strong support system in her “colorful landlord”, turned close friend.
Another cozy read, this is a summer feel-good story. Three sisters from different places and stages of life inherit a restaurant in Nantucket they didn’t know grandma owned. There’s one condition though: if they want to sell it, they must keep it for a year. They reluctantly throw themselves into a business and industry they know nothing about, but once the year is up, they are certain of their decision, and couldn’t be happier with their choice.
A Holywood blockbuster romance movie must include Italy and its very best scenic places, and our career-driven main character’s responsibility is just that: finding the most breathtaking, yet unpopular towns there. If she succeeds, her career would catapult her to being the first Hollywood female executive, and if she fails, well, her career would be over.
This wouldn’t be a good story if things worked as planned, so, as she falls in love (for the first time actually) while enjoying the dreamiest experiences Italy has to offer, she has decisions to make. A must-read if you enjoy romance and beautiful, vividly-described Italian scenery and food.
A 39-old New York City divorcee decides to start anew in a small English seaside town, and while busy building her new life and own business, she gets tangled in one murder mystery after another.
The books are entertaining and even charming, but I have to admit that, as with this author’s previous series I read, the murder mysteries get tiring/predictable for me. The books are captivating enough though, and if you’re also into cozy mysteries, check this series out.
This is non-fiction but it sure felt like fiction at times. It is a pretty captivating read about networking and finding ways to get to your ultimate goals, which, in the author’s case was an interview with Bill Gates himself, as well as other very famous names. I recommend!
I couldn’t put this book down! Yes, this is a true story and a recount of the actions that led to Anna Delvey, or, really - Sorokin, going to jail and headlining news stories all over the world. A must-read!
I’m currently reading this historical fiction, and while I’m not far enough into it to have much to say about it, I will say that I’m enthralled so far.
This book tells the story of a young woman who immigrates to America to save her family back home in Ireland from poverty. Once on land, she decides on the spot to pose as another girl with the same name (quite common in Ireland, it seems), who didn’t survive the Transatlantic trip, and unbeknownst to her had a job as a maid lined up in the household of one of the most famous American names, the “prince of steel” - Andrew Carnegie. I can’t wait to read the whole story, and I’ve already added to my reading list all of this author’s books I could find.
